Isa 9:6 For unto us a Child is born, Unto us a Son is given……… Ga 4:4 But when the fullness of the time had come, God sent forth His Son, born of a woman………. We have seen from our previous weeks of study that the Christ is the Son sent forth when the fullness of the time had come and that He was sent to the Jewish people in anticipation of the fulfillment of the prophecy that had been given to David by Nathan the prophet, recorded in – 2Sa 7:12 "When your days are fulfilled and you rest with your fathers, I will set up your seed after you, who will come from your body, and I will establish his kingdom. 13 "He shall build a house for My name, and I will establish the throne of his kingdom forever. 14 "I will be his Father, and he shall be My son. And David himself has given commentary on this prophecy with respect to its timing - 2Sa 7:19 And yet this is little in Thine eyes, Lord Jehovah, and Thou dost speak also concerning the house of Thy servant afar off. David knew that this prophecy would not be fulfilled in his son Solomon, but would await the time of his greater Son, who still remained ‘afar off’. a). We had seen that the timeframe that would encompass ‘the fullness of the times’ was given within Daniel’s prophecy of the 70 sevens, and that the focus of this prophecy was on the 70th of Daniel’s sevens. The 7 years of the tribulation and that which would follow. b). In much the same way, the prophecies concerning Messiah’s birth that we had looked at, including that which was spoken to Mary by the angel Gabriel, also had their focus on the establishment of the throne of His Kingdom forever, rather than the birth itself. c). Simply put then, all that we had seen concerning the Lord’s birth, saw that birth as inseparable from the Lord’s second advent and the future overthrow of Satan’s rule from the heavens and the total destruction of Gentile world power on the earth. d). The very fact of the Lord’s birth marked the absolute certainty of this coming Day. And as we have said before, to separate the Lord’s birth from the purpose for His birth, so as to turn it into something it was never meant to be, is to fail in rightly dividing the word of truth. e). Now, we know that the Lord’s first advent was not the time when the fulfillment of the prophecy concerning the establishment of the throne of His Kingdom was to be fulfilled. This we are still waiting for. f). However, the events surrounding the Lord’s birth and that which was to follow provide invaluable detail on the process that will bring us to the Day when His Kingdom will come, and His will be done on earth as it is in heaven. 2). Lk 2:25 And behold, there was a man in Jerusalem whose name was Simeon, and this man was just and devout, waiting for the Consolation of Israel, and the Holy Spirit was upon him…………29 “Lord, now You are letting Your servant depart in peace, According to Your word; 30 For my eyes have seen Your salvation 31 Which You have prepared before the face of all peoples, 32 A light to bring revelation to the Gentiles, And the glory of Your people Israel.” 33 And Joseph and His mother marveled at those things which were spoken of Him. 34 Then Simeon blessed them, and said to Mary His mother, “Behold, this Child is destined for the fall and rising of many in Israel, and for a sign which will be spoken against 35 (yes, a sword will pierce through your own soul also), that the thoughts of many hearts may be revealed.” There are several things we will want to note from these verses. So, let’s start with v30. In seeing the baby Jesus Simeon stated that his eyes had seen God’s salvation. Rather than just skipping over this statement, give some thought to exactly what salvation Simeon’s eyes saw? a). Similarly, in v31, we see that God’s salvation had been prepared ‘before the face of all peoples’, not just the Jewish people. And this is picked up again in v32, where God’s salvation is prepared in Jesus, who is ‘a light to bring revelation to the Gentiles, and the glory of Your people Israel’. b). And as we consider this, we will realize that Jesus, the Word made flesh, would provide the light of revelation to the Gentiles, the calling out of the church and the formation of His Bride, before His people Israel could walk in the promised rulership covenanted to David pictured through the coming of Christ’s glory – 2 Pe 1:18 And we heard this voice which came from heaven when we were with Him on the holy mountain.19 And so we have the prophetic word confirmed, which you do well to heed as a light that shines in a dark place, until the day dawns and the morning star rises in your hearts; 20 knowing this first, that no prophecy of Scripture is of any private interpretation, 21 for prophecy never came by the will of man, but holy men of God spoke as they were moved by the Holy Spirit. To continue in Luke Chapter 2 - 34 Then Simeon blessed them, and said to Mary His mother, “Behold, this Child is destined for the fall and rising of many in Israel, and for a sign which will be spoken against 35 (yes, a sword will pierce through your own soul also), that the thoughts of many hearts may be revealed.” It is extraordinary to see from v34 that Jesus was given to Israel as a sign and that this sign would be spoken against. c). Now, when we had looked at this in a previous study, we had seen that through the example Jesus set, death had to be followed by resurrection before glory could follow – Lk 24:25 Then He said to them, “O foolish ones, and slow of heart to believe in all that the prophets have spoken! 26 Ought not the Christ to have suffered these things and to enter into His glory?” And this exemplified the process that Israel must experience before Simeon’s prophecy of glory would be fulfilled. The nation is presently in the place of death, as pictured through Jonah and Lazarus, and therefore must be raised from the dead before ‘glory’ can follow. d). So, let’s take this foundational process and build on it further. 3). Mt 2:1 ¶ Now after Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea in the days of Herod the king, behold, wise men from the East came to Jerusalem, 2 saying, "Where is He who has been born King of the Jews? For we have seen His star in the East and have come to worship Him." The wise men from the east are Jews, coming from the geographical region of the old Babylonian empire. We will remember, that following the end of the Babylonian captivity the majority of the descendants of the Jews who had been taken captive stayed put, rather than returning to Israel. a). The wise men would have had knowledge of Balaam’s prophecy in Numbers Chapter 24, having seen the ‘Star’ that came out of Jacob, but their understanding was incomplete as they had gone to Jerusalem and not Bethlehem, to find Jesus. b). Jerusalem, the capital city of the Jews, would be the logical place to go to find the One born King of the Jews, but this was not the time when Jesus would be found there. The establishment of David’s throne was not yet – the sons of tumult still await destruction. c). And we are reminded who was in charge at that time – Mt 2:16 ¶ Then Herod, when he saw that he was deceived by the wise men, was exceedingly angry; and he sent forth and put to death all the male children who were in Bethlehem and in all its districts, from two years old and under, according to the time which he had determined from the wise men. It was Satan’s intent through Herod, to destroy the promised Seed of the Woman, who is also the promised Seed of Abraham and the greater Son of David, by putting to death all the male children who were in Bethlehem and its districts, from 2 years old and under. Mt 2:13 Now when they had departed, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream, saying, “Arise, take the young Child and His mother, flee to Egypt, and stay there until I bring you word; for Herod will seek the young Child to destroy Him.” 14 When he arose, he took the young Child and His mother by night and departed for Egypt, 15 and was there until the death of Herod, that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the Lord through the prophet, saying, “Out of Egypt I called My Son.” In anticipation of Herod’s actions, Joseph is warned by an angel to ‘flee to Egypt’, where the family is to stay ‘until I bring you word’. d). And this action is taken so ‘that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the Lord through the prophet, saying, “out of Egypt I called My Son”’. e). And the Prophet who spoke the word of the Lord was Hosea – Ho 11:1 “When Israel was a child, I loved him, And out of Egypt I called My son. That which Hosea recorded had to do with the nation of Israel and their deliverance from Egypt under Moses. But that which Hosea recorded was clearly not fulfilled though the Exodus but awaited a future fulfillment. A fulfillment that is prophetically pictured through the Christ’s experience, as a child, the sign that was given to Israel. f). So then, if we follow the typology surrounding Israel in Egypt, we will remember that Pharaoh had set out to destroy all the male Jewish children just as Herod had – Ex 1:15 Then the king of Egypt spoke to the Hebrew midwives, of whom the name of one was Shiphrah and the name of the other Puah; 16 and he said, “When you do the duties of a midwife for the Hebrew women, and see them on the birthstools, if it is a son, then you shall kill him; but if it is a daughter, then she shall live.”………….. 22 So Pharaoh commanded all his people, saying, “Every son who is born you shall cast into the river, and every daughter you shall save alive.” And in response to Pharaoh’s actions, we find this – Ex 2:1 And a man of the house of Levi went and took as wife a daughter of Levi. 2 So the woman conceived and bore a son. And when she saw that he was a beautiful child, she hid him three months. 3 But when she could no longer hide him, she took an ark of bulrushes for him, daubed it with asphalt and pitch, put the child in it, and laid it in the reeds by the river's bank. Moses, we will remember, was hidden in Pharaoh’s house until he was grown – Ex 2:11 Now it came to pass in those days, when Moses was grown, that he went out to his brethren and looked at their burdens. In the same way, the Christ was hidden in ‘Egypt’, hidden in the world – Mt 2:19 Now when Herod was dead, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared in a dream to Joseph in Egypt, 20 saying, “Arise, take the young Child and His mother, and go to the land of Israel, for those who sought the young Child's life are dead.” 21 Then he arose, took the young Child and His mother, and came into the land of Israel. And if we follow the account given by Matthew, we find Jesus returning from Egypt at the end of Chapter 2 and at the beginning of Chapter 3 He is grown and beginning His ministry to the Jewish people. Just as we saw with Moses. g). Moses, when he was grown, went out to his brethren with one intent – Acts 7:24 And seeing one of them suffer wrong, he defended and avenged him who was oppressed, and struck down the Egyptian. 25 For he supposed that his brethren would have understood that God would deliver them by his hand, but they did not understand. And that seen through Moses is the type for that seen through Christ, who came to deliver His brethren, but they did not understand – Jn 1:11 He came to His own [His own things – the regality promised through David], and His own [brethren] did not receive Him. Through the Scriptural account then, the parallel is drawn between the Christ and Moses. The Christ, was called out of Egypt to bring a message of deliverance to His brethren – Mt 4:17 From that time Jesus began to preach and to say, “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.” But both the message and the messenger were rejected. This was the experience of Moses in the type and could only therefore be the experience of the Christ in the antitype. h). The time of deliverance for the Jewish people would await a future time when Jesus will return a second time, just as Moses did. i). In the present, the Jewish people remain in ‘Egypt’, but through the Son having been called out of Egypt is the certainty of the fulfillment of that spoken by Hosea with respect to Israel. j). The day will come when God will call His adopted firstborn son, Israel, out of Egypt, both literally and figuratively, into the regality covenanted to them through David. 4). Through the type given in Exodus, the Jewish people’s deliverance from Egypt with a view to entering the land promised to Abraham, Isaac and Jacob was predicated upon a single event – Ex 12:12 “For I will pass through the land of Egypt on that night, and will strike all the firstborn in the land of Egypt, both man and beast; and against all the gods of Egypt I will execute judgment: I am the LORD. 13 Now the blood shall be a sign for you on the houses where you are. And when I see the blood, I will pass over you; and the plague shall not be on you to destroy you when I strike the land of Egypt. The lambs of the Passover had to be slain and the blood applied, the firstborn son had to die, before the march out of Egypt could begin. a). All the lambs killed at Passover throughout all subsequent generations pointed to The Lamb, the sacrifice that God would provide – Jn 1:36 And looking at Jesus as He walked, he said, “Behold the Lamb of God!” Because of the type previously set, Jesus, having been called out of Egypt as Moses was called out of Pharaoh’s house, had to be rejected. b). And for Israel to be delivered, so as to see Hosea’s prophecy fulfilled THE Passover Lamb had to be slain – Jn 19:5 But they cried out, “Away with Him, away with Him! Crucify Him!” Pilate said to them, “Shall I crucify your King?” The chief priests answered, “We have no king but Caesar!” 16 Then he delivered Him to them to be crucified. Then they took Jesus and led Him away. The reason for Christ’s birth and the reason He was called out of Egypt is unchangeable – Jn 18:37 Pilate therefore said to Him, “Are You a king then?” Jesus answered, “You say rightly that I am a king. For this cause I was born, and for this cause I have come into the world, that I should bear witness to the truth. Everyone who is of the truth hears My voice.” As the Lamb of God given to the Jewish people Jesus has been slain, His blood has been spilled. But deliverance cannot come to the Jewish people until the blood shed at Calvary is applied. c). And before this can happen the Jewish people as a whole must be found in the place typified by Egypt, out in the world, scattered among the Gentile nations, under the hand of the Assyrian Antichrist, previously pictured through the Assyrian Pharaoh in Egypt – Ho 11:5 “He shall not return to the land of Egypt; But the Assyrian shall be his king, Because they refused to repent. Lk 21:23 But woe to those who are pregnant and to those who are nursing babies in those days! For there will be great distress in the land and wrath upon this people. 24 And they will fall by the edge of the sword, and be led away captive into all nations. And Jerusalem will be trampled by Gentiles until the times of the Gentiles are fulfilled. The Jewish people being led away captive into all nations will happen at the mid-point of Daniel’s 70th seven. d). And as has been foreshadowed by the Assyrian and Babylonian captivities, it will be out among the nations that God will deal with His wayward son for the last time to bring him to repentance. e). And following that foreshadowed by Moses hidden in Pharaoh’s house, as Pharaoh attempted to destroy all the male children and Jesus hidden in Egypt as Herod attempted to do the same, it will be out in the world that the Jewish people, God’s son, will be hidden, protected and preserved as Antichrist attempts to exterminate them – Mt 13:44 “Again, the kingdom of heaven is like treasure hidden in a field, which a man found and hid; and for joy over it he goes and sells all that he has and buys that field. And in the antitype of Jacob wrestling with the man until the break of day, the Jewish people, through the events of the time of Jacob’s trouble, will be squeezed and formed into Israel, the prince who rules with God – Ge 32:26 And He said, “Let Me go, for the day breaks.” But he said, “I will not let You go unless You bless me!” 27 So He said to him, “What is your name?” He said, “Jacob.” 28 And He said, “Your name shall no longer be called Jacob, but Israel; for you have struggled with God and with men, and have prevailed.” Isa 43:1 But now, thus says the LORD, who created you, O Jacob, And He who formed you, O Israel: “Fear not, for I have redeemed you; I have called you by your name; You are Mine. 2 When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; And through the rivers, they shall not overflow you. When you walk through the fire, you shall not be burned, Nor shall the flame scorch you. 3 For I am the LORD your God, The Holy One of Israel, your Savior; In that Day God will call Israel by the name he was always supposed to have. The Jewish people scattered among the Gentile nations, will look on the One whom they have pierced and will apply the blood of the Passover Lamb killed 2000 years before. And just as the Jewish people came out of the Red Sea to be led to the promised land, so will the remnant of Israel be raised from the place of death to do the same. f). And following the resurrection of all the OT saints, following the type seen in Exodus, complete deliverance from ‘Egypt’ will follow – Mt 24:31 And He will send His angels with a great sound of a trumpet, and they will gather together His elect from the four winds, from one end of heaven to the other. It will be at this moment in time that God’s adopted firstborn son, Israel, will have been called out of Egypt in fulfillment of that spoken by Hosea. g). And what is it that has set this whole process in motion? God sending forth His Son, when the fullness of the time had come, and then calling His Son out of Egypt to be the sacrificial Lamb, the Lamb who was slain from the foundation of the world. We will continue with this next time – If the Lord is willing. This was the experience of Moses in the type and could only therefore be the experience of the Christ in the antitype. h). The time of deliverance for the Jewish people would await a future time when Jesus will return a second time, just as Moses did. i).
